Mika Häkkinen, born 28 September 1968 in Vantaa, Finland, is a former professional motor racing driver and two-time Formula 1 World Champion. His career in motorsport began at an early age when he took up karting. Häkkinen quickly proved his talent and in 1987 became the Finnish champion in the Formula Ford 1600 category. His success in the junior series attracted the attention of international teams, which led to his move to Formula 3. In 1990 Häkkinen won the British Formula 3 championship while racing for the West Surrey Racing team. This success opened the door to Formula 1, where he made his debut in 1991 with Team Lotus. Although his first seasons in Formula 1 were not easy, Häkkinen proved his potential and ability behind the wheel. The turning point in his career came in 1993, when he moved to McLaren. He first served as a test and reserve driver, but soon got the opportunity to race alongside Ayrton Senna.
